4-star product, 1-star support, tricky and expensive upgrade,
After running Norton 360 v4 for nearly a year across two Windows 7 PCs, I have been very satisfied with its performance and stability. I was looking forward to upgrading to v5, and extending my subscription.
Functionally, Norton 360 v5 is very similar to v4 with a few additions:
- improved SONAR protection (blocked 100% of virus/malware threats in Dennis Technology test)
- updated Download Insight for even greater protection / scan of downloaded files
- refined user interface
From an effectiveness and performance perspective, I don’t think you can get better than Norton 360 v5. It scans transparently in the background, with notification updates that show from the taskbar, without interrupting your work. Unlike other anti-virus software I’d used in the past, I didn’t notice significant impact on my work when it’s installed and running. When you download a file, the new Insight product will not only scan, but will let you know how many others have safely used the same file. It gives you a good level of confidence.
Just like the prior version, Norton 360 v4 installs easily, keeps out of the way for most operations, and hasn’t caused any incompatibility problems for me on two different computers, including a MacBook Pro running Apple’s BootCamp and Windows 7. For the price, you get a good value with an extensive set of capabilities including AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, basic Identity Protection, Internet Explorer Password Vault, PC Tuneup and Registry Cleaner, and Backup. The 3-computer edition is a particularly good value if you compare it against at the single-computer price.
The bad news is, if you’re a power user you’re going to be frustrated with the lack of options available, and even some features you’re used to in earlier Norton utilities. The user interface is completely wizard-driven. Even when you try to configure advanced Settings, you are presented with a Wizard interface. You cannot, for example, choose the disks you want to scan in a VirusScan. If you want to scan just a particular volume or folder, you can right-click on it and choose the Scan option from the Norton submenu, but that’s not exactly intuitive.
If there is a particular weakness in Norton360, it is the Backup capabilities which are very basic. There is no capability to clone or ghost your entire computer. And, it seems like Norton is trying to bait you into using their online file service (2GB free but only works on Windows). It is definitely not a replacement for more comprehensive backup utilities like Acronis TrueImage.
What will drive you mad, after a year, is the price that Norton dares to charge for a subscription renewal. You’re better off coming back to Amazon and re-purchasing Norton 360 for another year.
And, if you choose to buy another copy of Norton 360 – BEWARE – check the number of days remaining on your existing subscription, and don’t install / apply the new key until you have no time left. If you install before, the clock resets to 366 days (because Norton now thinks you have 2 different keys, each with their own subscription). I was able to get Symantec support to finally correct this and extend the subscription to include the remaining time from my prior version. But it took over AN HOUR working with their off-shore support by chat. It seemed like the support person was talking to multiple people at the same time, and what should have been a simple 5-minute resolution took much much longer. You wonder if Symantec support is trying to discourage people from using them at all. (I gave up on the phone support after 35 minutes on hold, and then tried chat-based support).

|Simple, Speedy, and Stalwart Security,
Norton 360 5.0 improves on version 4.0 by making it even faster, better looking, and taking up even less resources while retaining the same effectiveness. Installation is exceptionally fast and within a minute or two, Norton 360 is up and running. The interface could use some work, but overall, it is pretty nice. Important tasks are immediately in your face by hovering over four LARGE blocks. Scans are much faster than Microsoft Security Essentials, Panda, and McAfee. The add-ons are decent. Parental Controls are mediocre. It has a few nice tools that make online shopping easier and safer.
Norton 360 contains many performance improvement tools such as Registry Cleanup, File Cleanup, and Disk Optimizer. Some are available by default in Windows though I have found Norton’s to be more comprehensive and faster. Norton 360 is also very light on resources. It feels like it isn’t even there! The only thing reminding you Norton is installed is the icon in the System Tray, which restores confidence in your computer’s security.
PROS:
Very Fast Installation and Setup
Easy to use and organized Interface
Fast Scans (and still light on CPU and RAM usage)
Some nice little tools here and there
Very light on resources
No major popups. Only one I’ve encountered are “High Resource Usage” for Flight Simulator X, Photoshop, and Chrome with multiple tabs.
CONS:
The “not key” components feel rushed and buggy
Backup Notifications may nag you (can easily be turned off)
Overall a great value. If your computer’s security is important to you, get this.

|Norton 360 ends computer problems forever.,
Does Norton 360 live up to the hype? For me it does. I bought my first version of Norton 360 3 years ago. I had been using Zone Alarm, Zone Alarm is freeware and donations are accepted but not mandatory. Zone Alarm did not cut it for me. I kept getting emails from them about all these wonderful premium versions that I could buy. They pestered and pestered. With Zone Alarm it seems that it totally took over my computer. Also, my computer was getting slower and slower and no matter what solution I would try, eventually, my computer would slow down again very soon.
About three years ago, a friend mentioned Norton 360 to me and I had recalled that a lot of techies did not care for Norton products and they had gotten a pretty bad rap from the tech community. I decided to give 360 a try. I visited one of my local electronics big box stores and picked up a CD ROM version of Norton 360. At the time I had a desktop from HP and a laptop from Toshiba. The CD ROM allows you to protect up to 3 computers. The desktop was a Intel quad with 4g of RAM. The Laptop was Intel Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM. I’ve read some opinions that Norton 360 is resource hungry. This was never an issue for me. Norton 360 has always performed well and mostly in the background.
The first thing I noticed with 360 was that my HP Desktop which I had been using almost exclusively, was not getting bogged down anymore. Norton 360 has all kinds of cool features that help you regain control of your computer. The program once installed is very intuitive and I was an expert at using the wide array of features in no time. I keep an access button on my task bar. when I want to run a scan I just open it up and choose either a quick scan or better yet a full scan. The full scan checks for updates, scans for viruses and spyware, removes temporary files and performs a disc optimization (disc cleanup). The great thing is it does all this in the background and you can use your computer any way you like during the scan.
Once the scan is complete, you get a full report on what was uncovered during the scan. You can dig up as much detail as you like and it’s very interesting. Norton 360 is great for novice computer users and I recommend running scans often if not every day.
I’m on my 5th version of Norton 360 and it just keeps getting better and better. My current desktop is a HP E9290F w/ Intel Core I7, 920HZ @267GHZ CPU. It has 9.00 GB of RAM and utilizes the Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Operating System. I’ve had this computer for a year now and It runs as fast and efficiently today as it did when I did my initial set up. You can’t ask for more than that. I give Norton 360 all the credit. I am running Norton 360 Version 5 on all three computers in the house and all is well.
Norton 360 retails for about $79. I have no trouble finding it on Amazon from sellers offering a $40 discount. So, for under $40. I keep three computers, that cost a great deal of money, running 24/7 with no issues. Enough said. Cheers.

|Very powerful, but missing critical features.,
I found this at a very low price on a Black Friday sale, so I threw caution to the wind and bought it. Two crucial things that the buyer needs to be aware of : sampling is limited to 16bit (where 24 bit audio is preferable to it vastly) AND , more importantly, there is no live input monitoring. This is a very critical feature, if you want to record from any amplified instrument – for instance, you can’t play on an electric guitar and actually HEAR what you’re playing (unless you hook up a splitter beforehand); this is a bigger problem if you’re recording using audio plugins, as you have no idea what their effect is until you play it back.

|A great Daw and Looping product for the price.,
I own Acid Pro 7, and I purchased this product on a Black Friday deal.
has greatly improved stabilitywith VST pluggins, and has even tighter and easier to use Audio Editing than Acid Music 7.I can edit loops so much faster and exact with Acid Music 8 than in version 7 pro or music.I love using this with my notebook computer and an ASIO compliant sound device (Cakewalk UA-1G).
I also own Acid Music 7. This product (Acid Music Studio
The reviewer that complained that Acid Music 8 is only 16bit 44k and does not have direct sound (The ability to monitor what you are recording in real time).
Has no grounds for a complaint in my opinion and should please read up on Sony’s product line.Acid Music 8 does support direct sound with an ASIO compliant sound device. If you want 24bit/96k, you need to purchase the Acid Pro version.
Acid Music 8 comes with a VST (REAL TIME) guitar amp simulator “Studio Devil British Valve Custom (BVC) software” and a VST piano “Piano TruePianos Amber Lite piano”. It also has “Studio-quality audio effects” non real time VST, but you can purchase 3rd party VST FX if needed. If you do not have an ASIO adaptor, you can use a free download “ASIO4ALL” for direct sound, but I have never liked the product myself. Just buy a good ASIO sound adaptor and be done with it. I use SONAR XL, BAND IN A BOX, SOUND FORGE PRO, ACID PRO etc. All these products have their own charms and purposes. Acid Music Studio 8 is no exception. You just need to read the manual, visit the support Forums and invest in compatible hardware.
For the price it is a very nice DAW & LOOPER. I use it to record Guitar & Vocals while mobile or to loop tracks and export them to my Roland SP404-SX or my SPD-S.

|Sony is Great!,
I needed this program to encase another program called Sound Soap Pro which cleans up background noise on an audio track like someone with a leaf blower on the next block, but must attach itself to another sound program to work.
Well, I like the Sony program BEST! Especially since it has a tooter program that walks you step by step through the very difficult process of creating a piece of music until you learn the buttons, then you can turn it off.
Certainly worth the price.
